River Activities Near Gujo: Rafting, Shower Climbing & SUP
The Nagara River — one of Japan’s officially recognized “three great clear rivers” — runs right through Gujo City, and a genuinely good stretch of water-based activity has grown up around it. Two operators stand out, and I’ve been to both.
DEC’s — the rafting specialist
DEC’s is based at the southern edge of Gujo, in a rebuilt (2020) facility with a deliberately West Coast American aesthetic — a striking thing to find on the banks of a Japanese mountain river. It’s a rafting-focused operator, and it’s genuinely well-regarded: it ranked #1 in Jalan’s national rafting category out of 253 listed operators.
What sets it apart: kids from elementary school age can join, and the operator is a member of Rafting Association Japan (RAJ), the country’s only rafting safety governing body — guides are RAJ-licensed. Beginner and advanced route options run within the same tour, so mixed-experience groups can go together. It’s also known for a strong female-guide presence and a notably high repeat-customer rate among women, which the operator itself attributes to guide quality and facility cleanliness.
Tours run twice daily (morning and afternoon), with the afternoon tour restricted to those older than elementary-school age. A hot spring (Minami Kodakara Onsen — the same one with its own Nagaragawa Railway station) is about 5 minutes away by car — a genuinely good way to close out the day.
Access: Nagaragawa Railway, Yasaka Station, about 1 minute on foot. This is one of the few river activities near Gujo that’s realistically reachable by train rather than requiring a car.
Earth Ship — rafting, SUP & shower climbing, all in one place
Earth Ship runs out of the Minami area, and covers more ground than DEC’s: rafting, SUP (stand-up paddleboarding), and shower climbing (canyoning-style river/waterfall scrambling), plus seasonal one-person packraft trips in spring and autumn.
Programs split into two categories: “adults only” (18+) tours pitched as a more intense river experience, and family-friendly tours (rafting from age 5). This is a useful distinction if your group has a mix of thrill-seekers and young kids — check which program category fits before booking.
Shower climbing pricing (as published): around ¥9,900 per person for a 2-person group, dropping to ¥8,800 per person for groups of 4+, with a small surcharge during the mid-August obon period. Rafting and SUP tours include gear rental, an onsen ticket, and tour photos in the price.
English support: Earth Ship publishes its own language rating — 3 out of 5 stars for English, 2 out of 5 for Chinese, with body language and translation devices used to fill the gaps. That’s a more honest self-assessment than most operators offer, and it’s roughly what to expect: functional communication, not a fluent English-language tour.
Season: early April to late October. This isn’t a year-round activity — the river simply isn’t warm enough outside that window.
Which one to pick
Honest take: if rafting is specifically what you want, DEC’s is the more specialized, higher-volume operator with the strongest reputation and train access. If you want to combine rafting with SUP or shower climbing — or you’re bringing young kids and want a dedicated family program — Earth Ship’s broader range and clearer age-based program split make more sense.
Both require a car or taxi for at least part of the access (Earth Ship’s shower climbing meeting point is different from its rafting base, so check which location applies to your booking).
